The Acting Director-General of the Ghana Health Service, Prof. Samuel Kaba Akoriyea, has described a new partnership between GHS and the Health Community of West Africa Association (HCOWAA) towards the 2025 China–West Africa Medical and Health Industry Expo as “a gateway to a new era” in healthcare across the sub-region.

Speaking at the official launch of the 2025 China–West Africa Medical & Health Industry Expo and AI Diagnosis & Project Cooperation Summit, he underscored the strategic importance of the partnership between GHS and the Health Community of West Africa Association (HCOWA).

“Through this collaboration, we aim to deepen healthcare cooperation, accelerate innovation, and shape a healthier future for our people,” he said.

He also emphasized the strategic focus on artificial intelligence, innovation, and cross-border cooperation. “We are laying a new track for the health sector in West Africa one that is resilient, data-driven, AI-enabled, and people-focused,” he said. The collaboration will support the establishment of AI-powered diagnostic centers, a national cancer research facility, and greater access to advanced medical technologies.

“We are committed to working hand-in-hand with HCOWA and all relevant partners to ensure the benefits of this collaboration are realized at all levels of our health system—from district clinics to teaching hospitals,” Prof. Akoriyea emphasized. He also praised HCOWA’s regional leadership: “HCOWA is not only bringing China and Ghana together, but is mobilizing health stakeholders across the sub-region to form a united front in improving healthcare delivery.”

The partnership reflects a broader regional strategy of multilateral cooperation and knowledge exchange. Prof. Akoriyea noted that the participation of all 16 ECOWAS member states, alongside Chinese medical enterprises and private health investors, signals a strong commitment to innovation, research, and shared health outcomes.

He also outlined a bold vision to transform Ghana into a hub for regional health advancement through a series of impactful projects. These include the establishment of AI-powered diagnostic and treatment centers, a national Cancer Treatment and Research Centre, and the deployment of modern surgical equipment and pharmaceutical solutions via public-private partnerships.

The 2025 Expo expected to attract over 1,500 stakeholders from across West Africa and China, will take place from August 20 to 22 at the Grand Arena of the Accra International Conference Centre. It will feature specialized forums on cancer, dialysis, eye care, and AI-integrated Traditional Chinese Medicine, alongside the recognition of top-performing health professionals and institutions through awards.
