The National Health Insurance Authority (NHIA) has made a significant step in fulfilling its commitment to timely reimbursements by disbursing GH¢800 million to healthcare providers. This payment settles claims received for June and July 2024, bringing the NHIA into compliance with the three-month reimbursement timeline agreed upon with providers.
Public health institutions received the largest share of the payments, totaling GH¢223.9 million, or 56.03% of the total sum. Private healthcare facilities were also allocated GH¢106.5 million, while additional funds were provided to quasi-public and mission healthcare centers. These payments ensure the continued delivery of quality healthcare services under the National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS).
In a press release signed by NHIA Chief Executive, Dr. Da-Costa Aboagye, the Authority emphasized its commitment to supporting healthcare providers and ensuring the long-term sustainability of the NHIS. The NHIA’s recent disbursements are part of its ongoing efforts to maintain timely payments, having paid GH¢151 million in August, GH¢135.6 million in July, GH¢170.8 million in April, GH¢180 million in March, and GH¢130.2 million in February 2024, covering claims up to December 2023.
“The NHIA is dedicated to enhancing timely payments and ensuring the continuous provision of high-quality healthcare services to NHIS members. Our Benefit Package covers over 95% of medical conditions, and more than 550 drugs are included on the NHIS medicines list,” the statement read.
Dr. Aboagye expressed gratitude to healthcare providers for their ongoing support and commitment to delivering healthcare services to Ghanaians. He reiterated the NHIA’s commitment to engaging with stakeholders to address any concerns and ensure a sustainable and efficient healthcare system.
This timely payment reflects the NHIA’s dedication to improving the overall healthcare infrastructure and providing high-quality services to NHIS subscribers across Ghana.
