Effiduase Government Hospital, located in the Ashanti region, has recently documented two fatalities out of 23 preterm birth cases at its Neonatal Intensive Care Unit in May and June.
The hospital attributes these deaths partly to the unit’s limited space and essential equipment, such as an incubator, prompting many expectant mothers to seek care elsewhere.
To address these challenges and improve survival rates for preterm babies, the Kokroko Charities Foundation has generously donated a state-of-the-art incubator to the hospital.
This comes as a critical intervention, given that over 430 expectant mothers seek antenatal care monthly at Effiduase Government Hospital, with significant gaps in delivery due to capacity constraints.
Dr. Ofori Amoah, the director of health for Sekyere East District, highlighted the hospital’s longstanding infrastructure issues, exacerbated by high patient intake and community demand. He expressed gratitude for the incubator donation, stressing its immediate impact on enhancing medical care.
Led by veteran journalist Kwame Sefa Kayi, the donation of the $10,000 incubator marks a significant addition to Effiduase’s Pediatric Unit, part of Kokroko Charities’ broader initiative to equip deprived hospitals with essential medical resources.
