Essence Clinic and Medical Lab has become the first healthcare facility in Ghana to introduce and deploy a Rapid Human Papillomavirus (HPV) testing kit. This initiative, developed in collaboration with Chinese partners, promises to transform cervical cancer screening by providing results in minutes, a dramatic improvement over traditional methods.
Dr. Selina Leeward, a Gynecologist at Essence Clinic and the Director of HPV Awareness and Preventive Care at the Health Community of West Africa Association, highlighted the transformative potential of the new kits. “Normally, what we do in Ghana is the Pap smear, but we don’t routinely test for HPV, the Pap smear takes time, but with the HPV test, it takes just two minutes to complete and get a result. For a low-middle-income country like Ghana, this is a crucial motivation to improve our healthcare system.” Dr. Leeward explained.
Cervical cancer, primarily caused by persistent HPV infection, remains a critical public health challenge in Ghana. The World Health Organization’s recent push for increased cervical cancer awareness underscored the urgent need for effective, accessible screening.
The rapid HPV kit directly addresses systemic gaps. “It has really helped a lot,” said Dr. Leeward, contrasting it with the Pap smear, where “it takes a while before the results are out.” This delay often leads to patients being lost to follow-up. The new test, she noted, “has really helped in breaking that gap in Ghanaian society.”
Lamptey Simon, a Lab Scientist at Essence Clinic and Medical Lab, echoed the benefits, stating the kits have made their work more efficient and reduced waiting times for patients.
“For years, cervical cancer has been a major health issue in Ghana. Following the World Health Organization’s recent awareness initiative on cervical cancer, Essence Clinic, in collaboration with Chinese partners, has introduced HPV test kits, featuring Dr. Selina, through a social media campaign. We hope other clinics will join us in promoting Ghana’s health, and Essence is willing to collaborate with healthcare facilities to distribute these HPV test kits.” He stated.
Beyond efficiency, the program’s core mission is early detection and treatment. “If a patient has a lesion, the HPV test, helps to identify it fast before it advances,” Dr. Leeward emphasized. “This can help in eliminating the rate at which cervical cancer is rising in the country.”
The clinic is now calling for wider adoption across Ghana’s healthcare landscape. “Essence is willing to collaborate with other healthcare facilities to distribute the HPV test kits,” Dr. Leeward announced. She urged other clinics to pay attention, noting the kits break down workload and are vital for proactive care. The goal is to build a national partnership to promote the wellbeing of all Ghanaians.
This historic move by Essence Clinic and Medical Lab marks a pivotal shift towards faster, more accessible preventive care, offering a powerful new tool in Ghana’s fight against cervical cancer.
