The drive to deepen China–West Africa healthcare cooperation received a major boost on Tuesday, May 19th 2026, as Ghana’s Ambassador to China, His Excellency Kojo Bonsu, together with his delegation, paid a strategic visit to the headquarters of the Health Community of West Africa Association in Chengdu, Sichuan Province, where they held special talks with ten leading Chinese medical enterprises.
Held at the Third Medical Innovation Center Phase IV of the Wenjiang District Electronic Science and Technology Valley, the meeting served as a strategic platform for dialogue on healthcare investment, market access and industrial cooperation between China and West Africa.
The visit marked the second official engagement by H.E. Kojo Bonsu at the Association’s headquarters, a development widely viewed as a reflection of the growing trust, sustained cooperation and expanding partnership between both sides in promoting practical healthcare collaboration between China and Africa.
Discussions during the forum centered on key issues shaping the future of China–West Africa medical cooperation, including market entry procedures, regulatory access, industrial cooperation models, investment policies and the export prospects of Chinese medical and healthcare products to Ghana and the wider West African market.
Representatives from participating enterprises actively introduced their flagship products, technological strengths and development plans while expressing strong interest in expanding into West Africa’s healthcare market. The exchanges underscored the increasing confidence of Chinese healthcare enterprises in Africa’s growing medical economy and their commitment to strengthening China–Africa health industry collaboration.
Engagements also involved practical consultations on healthcare market demand, policy frameworks and strategies for building sustainable commercial partnerships. The discussions highlighted the importance of creating structured coordination mechanisms capable of connecting Chinese innovation with healthcare needs across West Africa.
To further strengthen this cooperation framework and establish more direct industrial linkages between China and West Africa, the Health Community of West Africa Association is spearheading preparations for the 2026 China–West Africa Healthcare Industry Expo and AI Deployment & Project Collaboration Summit, scheduled to take place from August 19–21, 2026, in Accra.
The upcoming event is expected to convene government institutions, industry associations, buyers, healthcare institutions and leading enterprises from across West Africa and China. Discussions will focus on key areas including digital transformation within the healthcare industry, deployment of artificial intelligence in medical practice, business and supply-demand matchmaking, project visits and investment policy interpretation.
The Expo is designed to provide Chinese enterprises with a comprehensive and highly efficient platform for overseas engagement while creating direct access to West Africa’s healthcare ecosystem. Participants will have the opportunity to connect with core regional buyers, gain deeper understanding of regulatory requirements and explore emerging opportunities within Africa’s expanding healthcare market.
With West Africa currently undergoing rapid healthcare digitalisation and system modernisation, stakeholders believe the region presents significant potential for AI-enabled healthcare solutions, medical technology deployment and healthcare investment.
The Health Community of West Africa Association is therefore calling on medical and healthcare enterprises, technology institutions and investors interested in expanding into African markets to actively participate in the Expo, describing the platform as a gateway to strategic partnerships, market intelligence and long-term industry collaboration within one of the world’s emerging healthcare frontiers.
