US news reported today 12th June 2024 that Russian authorities detained tree suspects of botulism break after 12 people got hospitalized from a rare dangerous disease.
Russia’s Investigative Committee has detained two top managers of a delivery service and a head of a canned bean company in a criminal inquiry linked to a ready-to-eat salad outbreak, involving safety standards violations.
Foodborne botulism is a rare illness caused by Clostridium botulinum, a toxin found in improperly canned, preserved, or fermented foods. Symptoms include severe abdominal pain, vomiting, diarrhea, blurred vision, dry mouth, difficulty swallowing or speaking, and neurological symptoms. In Moscow, 121 people have sought medical help with suspected botulism, with 55 in serious condition. In the Nizhny Novgorod region, 14 people have been diagnosed, and 14 more have been hospitalized.
The popular delivery service Kukhnya Na Rayone, which serves in Moscow, Kazan, Nizhny Novgorod, and several other cities, created and sold the two salads, but by Tuesday, it appeared that the authorities were only examining one of them. Over the weekend, Kukhnya Na Rayone ceased operations, stating in an online statement that it would be inspecting its other food items and would no longer be serving the salad that contained canned beans.
Whether the salad and the canned beans were tainted was not made clear by the officials. However, a criminal investigation has been opened, and the director of Kukhnya Na Rayone, Anton Lozin, the head of the firm’s quality department, Yelena Mashkova, and the head of Savon-K, a company that produces canned beans, Vladimir Shin, have all been taken into custody.
