In a heartfelt interview with HealthPulse Magazine, Dr. Mary Dede Ansong, CEO and Co-founder of the International Sickle Cell Centre, shared her personal journey and the driving force behind her mission to combat sickle cell disease in Ghana and beyond.

Her awakening came during her university years when her twin sister, in tears, discovered she was a carrier of the sickle cell trait. That moment ignited Dr. Ansong’s determination to address the widespread lack of awareness surrounding the condition. “I realized it was a huge issue, and something needed to be done, not just in the country but internationally” she said.

A medical doctor by profession, Dr. Ansong emphasized that sickle cell disease is not a curse but a genetic condition occurring when an S sperm fertilizes an S egg. She highlighted common triggers such as mosquito bites, extreme weather, and dehydration, urging Ghanaians to know their status early—especially before entering relationships—to prevent passing the condition to future children.

The International Sickle Cell Centre focuses on awareness, advocacy, and interventions, including support for patients who have dropped out of school due to health challenges. Through entrepreneurial and employment programs, the organization trains individuals in coping mechanisms and caregiving skills to improve quality of life.

Dr. Ansong expressed her gratitude for potential partnerships and funding, which would enable the organization to bridge the gap in healthcare and make living easier for sickle cell patients. Her dream is to establish a clinic dedicated to caring for sickle cell patients. “Whether it’s your expertise, funding or donated items, every contribution helps push our agenda forward,” she pointed out.

The International Sickle Cell Centre has received notable awards, including the 40 under 40 awards and Entrepreneurship awards for healthcare, but Dr. Ansong’s ultimate goal is to advocate for sickle cell awareness and provide support to every individual affected by the condition.

With unwavering dedication, Dr. Ansong and her team continue to bridge gaps in healthcare, striving for a future where living with sickle cell disease becomes easier for all. She remains steadfast in her advocacy. Her message to sickle cell warriors is one of hope: “You are not alone. Keep fighting—there are supporters and loved ones rooting for you.”
