The Grand Arena of the Accra International Conference Centre was transformed into a hub of innovation, diplomacy, and healthcare advancement as regional leaders, dignitaries, and global experts convened for the 2025 China–West Africa Medical and Health Industry Expo & AI Diagnosis and Project Cooperation Summit, held from August 20–22, 2025.

Organized by the Health Community of West Africa (HCOWA) Association in collaboration with the Ghana Health Service, and under the auspices of the Ministry of Health and the Ministry of Trade and Industry, the landmark three-day event was guided by the theme: “Focusing on Supply-Demand Cooperation to Promote the Integrated Development of the China-Africa Health Industry.”

High-Level Dignitaries Set the Tone

The summit opened with a powerful Presidential Address delivered on behalf of the President of Ghana by Hon. Julius Debrah, Chief of Staff, who reaffirmed Ghana’s commitment to becoming a hub for healthcare innovation and excellence in West Africa. He emphasized that Ghana views healthcare not merely as a social necessity, but as a strategic pillar for national development and regional growth.

Other notable dignitaries include:

  • Prof. Grace Ayensu Danquah, Deputy Minister of Health of Ghana
  • H.E. Tong Defa, Chinese Ambassador to Ghana
  • Madam Jiang Sihong, President of HCOWA Association
  • Hon. Fatou Mbaye Sylla, Director General at the Ministry of Health, Senegal
  • Prof. Mustapha Midjiyawa, Minister of Health of Togo

Together, their presence highlighted the shared political will and cross-border collaboration driving China–West Africa healthcare partnerships.

In her keynote remarks, Madam Jiang Sihong, President of HCOWA Association, captured the spirit of the gathering:

“This Expo marks not just a gathering, but a movement to transform healthcare in West Africa through innovation, technology, and collaboration. About 300 manufacturers from China are preparing to set up plants here in Ghana. This means jobs, industrial growth, and reduced dependence on imports. We are working closely with the Ministry of Trade and Industry to make this a reality.”

The Broader Impact

The gathering was more than a medical expo; it was a pan-African dialogue intertwined with global expertise. By highlighting healthcare as a driver of industrial growth, employment creation, and economic empowerment, the summit reinforced the interconnectedness of health and trade.

With the announcement of plans for Chinese manufacturers to establish production plants in Ghana, the Expo also pointed to a new era of local manufacturing and reduced import dependency. This initiative promises not only to strengthen supply chains but also to make medical technologies more affordable and accessible across the region.

The 2025 China–West Africa Medical and Health Industry Expo thus underscored a clear message:  Africa’s healthcare future must be built through partnerships, shared knowledge, and bold investments that transcend borders.
