The Health Community of West Africa Association has announced the appointment of a globally renowned Chief Scientist – Professor Ma Xuelei from West China Hospital, Sichuan University. This strategic appointment signals a major leap forward in the Association’s mission to bridge the gap between local healthcare challenges and world-class scientific solutions.
The Health Community of West Africa Association is a premier regional network dedicated to promoting healthcare standards and improving access to quality medical services across West Africa.
The association brings together healthcare professionals, institutions and stakeholders to share knowledge, build capacity and advocate for systems that deliver safe, equitable, and effective care. Through collaboration, training, and community engagement, the Association fosters a dynamic health community that responds to the real needs of West African populations. The creation of this Chief Scientist role is the natural evolution of that mission—placing research and data-driven innovation at the core of regional health policy.
Stepping into this pivotal role is a distinguished leader whose profile bridges the gap between clinical immunology, artificial intelligence and global oncology. The new Chief Scientist brings an extraordinary wealth of experience to West Africa, including:
- Deputy Director of the Department of Tumor Biotherapy, Researcher, and Doctoral Supervisor.
- Laureate of the National-level Young Talent Program in Science and Technology and the Sichuan Tianfu Qingcheng Talent in Science and Technology.

Perhaps most impressive is the Chief Scientist’s prolific research output. As the corresponding author, he has published over 80 SCI papers in some of the world’s most prestigious journals, including Cancer Cell (cover), Cell Metabolism(cover), Signal Transduction and Targeted Therapy (STTT), Nature Human Behavior, Bioactive Materials, Nature Communications, and Cell Discovery.
His work has accumulated over 14,000 citations with an H-index of 57, a testament to the profound influence of his research. Critically, several of his studies have been cited more than ten times in international guidelines such as those by the National Comprehensive Cancer Network (NCCN), the gold standard for global oncology policy.
For four consecutive years, he has been listed among the world’s top 2% of scientists—a distinction reserved for the most cited and impactful researchers globally. Additionally, he is a recipient of the Innovation Contribution Award for China’s Emerging Scientists.
Through this collaboration and training, the Health Community of West Africa Association is turning regional health challenges into research opportunities. With a globally renowned Chief Scientist now leading its medical research projects, the Association is poised to build local expertise and deliver solutions to improve patients’ outcome.
