The Health Community of West Africa Association has reaffirmed its commitment to improving healthcare delivery across the region through its support for a healthcare initiative organized by the Ghana Prisons Service. The programme, which sought support in the form of medicines, medical equipment, and financial assistance to improve healthcare services for prison inmates, also introduced plans to mobilize resources for the construction of infirmaries and hospitals within the prison system.
Recognizing that the initiative aligns with its mission of strengthening healthcare systems in West Africa, Health Community of West Africa Association joined other stakeholders in supporting the cause. The donation was in the form HPV test kits to support cervical cancer screening and prevention among prison inmates and prison officers. The event brought together key institutions, including the Director for Ghana Health Service, Professor Samuel Kaba Akoriyea, health leaders from 37 Military Hospital, the Medical and Dental Council, the Pharmacy Council, the Allied Health Professions Council, and other healthcare partners, reinforcing the importance of collaborative action in addressing healthcare challenges.
Beyond the donation, the engagement provided an opportunity for discussions on strengthening collaboration between the prison health system and the wider healthcare sector. HCOWA reaffirmed its commitment to supporting healthcare initiatives, particularly those focused on preventive healthcare and cervical cancer screening, while exploring additional partnerships that will improve access to quality healthcare for vulnerable populations across Ghana and the West African sub-region.
This spirit of collaboration and commitment to healthcare transformation is the same vision driving the 2026 China–West Africa Medical and Health Industry Expo & AI Deployment and Project Cooperation Summit, scheduled for 19th–21st August 2026. Organized by HCOWA, the Expo will bring together over 300 exhibitors, 5,000+ medical practitioners, participants from all 16 West African countries, and delegates from more than 20 countries to foster partnerships, promote healthcare innovation, and facilitate knowledge exchange across the global healthcare ecosystem.
The Expo will showcase cutting-edge advancements in medical devices, pharmaceuticals, laboratory equipment, digital health, artificial intelligence, telemedicine, dental care, and wellness solutions, while creating opportunities for investment, technology transfer, and cross-border cooperation.
